I use painting, collage and installations to explore space, spacecraft and landscape. As a result of living across the arroyo from the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) In Pasadena, California, I knew people who worked for the lab, built spacecraft and guided space missions. JPL is at the cutting edge of robotic exploration of the solar system and returned far more important data than manned space flights.
I found JPL spacecraft to be interesting as objects and even though their purpose was to gather data their sculptural aspects intrigued me.The function of still life is to capture the reflection of light. What better subject for still life at least a postmodern one –than pieces of metal in space where light is undiluted by atmosphere? These still life’s no longer take the domestic as subject. They take on the universe itself.
