I am drawn to the colors and minimalistic pictures in the Dick and Jane series of books in which I learned to read. The characters appear on their simple white surface, with bold black type spelling out simple sentences. I was hooked on wanting to color and draw instead of participating in class. This is surely the foundation of my desire to become an artist. I have used Jane to tell stories, both of me and of myth. She has been a schoolgirl and a mythological goddess who gives birth to creation. She has provided a site for subjective critique concerning gender roles, social commentary, assumptions, and expectations.
I have also used cups, pitchers, and bowls to symbolize the female body as a vessel. These recurrent symbols of emptiness and fullness of creativity, ideas and progeny ebb and flow, as does life. The state of the container is actively and continually changing.
After illustrating Thirteen Stanzas About a Blackbird by Wallace Stevens as a project with other artists, I am working on a six panel creation story starring Eurynome that I found in The Greek Myths by Robert Graves. Eurynome won’t be pictured, only the results of her actions. Jane can take a well deserved vacation.
