My primary form of sculpture is carving, preferably stone or wood. Ideas are formulated, then materials are sought to accommodate the piece. It can also happen the other way around. When I come upon a piece of wood or stone with no specific idea in mind, the material will tell me what needs to happen. My preferred materials are English Boxwood, Holly, Alabaster, Soapstone and Marble. My imagery is mostly derived from various spiritual/philosophical realms. I have utilized imagery from Buddhism, Native America, Christianity, Celtic, Asian, and Neolithic periods. My sculpture is a form of working meditation, some pieces taking great lengths of time to complete. When completed I feel the piece has taken on aspects of what the image represents, becoming a totem-like creation, imbued with the power of the image. Each piece created helps with my search, and moves me further along the path. |
