When we forget we are being watched, we show who we are. Those are the moments – or rather, the moments between moments – that I find the most intriguing. I work from imagery that captures people in between poses or in the midst of changing expressions. These are the downbeats that define us and make us memorable. Painting allows me to examine them and bring them to life. My work illuminates the mundane by exaggerating the awkward, calm, or introspective. By reconstructing and preserving an otherwise overlooked or forgotten moment, my painting process becomes an exploration of the ‘personality’ of that moment. Through the perspectives I choose, the deletion of extraneous information, the variation in my brush strokes, or the emphasis of a particular color, my work encourages the viewer to reconsider and reevaluate the ordinary interludes that make everyday life extraordinary. |
