I want viewers to feel welcomed when they look at my art. I want my art and I to be part of a community. I want common experiences. Regardless of the subject in my work, I look for connections among shapes and lines and colors that will be familiar to viewers.
I want my impressions of the places I paint to be crisp and clear so I can empty my head, set my consciousness aside, focus on the light and temperature of that place, and pull the paint across the canvas. If a person looking at the painting can see that light and feel the temperature of that place, we have a connection. That connection is not superficial, manufactured to meet social norms. It’s a human connection rooted in observing, contemplating, and sharing awareness.
My art is communication, telling people about a place I’ve experienced and hoping they can enjoy the story I’m sharing.
