When I was young I often played outside. I would stop what I was doing and close my eyes but not all the way to see the colors of the landscape. My lashes would blur all the details in the landscape and allow for just color and light to be seen. It was calming and centering.
The horizon is often used as a metaphor for hope for the future. In a time of political division, social unrest, and a pandemic, I began creating these paintings to ground myself and meditate on the horizon, the future.
This work began June 2020 while on sabbatical from teaching. When faced with all of my travel being canceled, I decided to take a deep dive into this series. It is inspired by the landscape and the ever-changing color and light of the seasons with a focus on the horizon.
